Basketball has been part of Bob Nienaber’s life for as long as he can remember. He has been playing and coaching for the better part of three decades and doesn’t plan on slowing down any time soon.
"My experiences with basketball provided me so much," Bob will tell you. "…lifelong friends, fun, family bonds, travel." Some of his favorite basketball memories are his first AAU national tournament in Salt Lake City, Utah, taking his Holy Cross High School team to the Kentucky All A Classic State Tournament after a Class A regional championship his senior year and watching his UK Wildcats win an NCAA Championship in New Orleans alongside his dad, brother, and future wife.
"I’ve learned a lot of valuable life skills from the game of basketball as well … preparation, self-sacrifice, hard work, communication, trust … how to be a team player, how to push yourself beyond your limits, how to win and lose well, and how to lead and follow."
Now Bob takes those same skills into his work, making sure his clients are well-prepared for their kids’ education and for retirement, ensuring families are taken care of whether things go according to plan or not, and building trust and camaraderie with clients and colleagues. He never forgets what the game of basketball has taught him and how it intersects with the rest of life off the court.
"My dad was my coach growing up. And it’s one of the reasons I chose this career – so I would have the autonomy to build my schedule so that I could coach my kids, attend the preschool Christmas pageant or be home for family dinner." Besides basketball, Bob’s other passions that you quickly learn about him are his family and his faith. He took his wife, Stacey, to the Holy Cross senior prom in 1999 and they have been together ever since. Now they have four strong, beautiful daughters.
You will still find Bob on the court, in a game at the Anderson HealthPlex or in a men’s league around town. Or maybe you’ll see him on the sidelines coaching one of his daughters’ teams. He enjoys teaching the game. He loves building those same values of teamwork and servant leadership into young kids’ character, just as others built them into his.
Bob is President and Advisor, working personally with our clients in their financial planning. He helps our clients navigate the complex waters of retirement, investments, insurance, taxes, estate planning and education funding and loans. He also takes an active role in the strategic vision and management of the firm.
Bob came to The Lyon Group in 2009 with this goal: to leverage his analytical skills and desire to "build" … to build meaningful, long-term relationships with clients and colleagues … to build real financial game plans, in a language clients understand that align their wealth with their values … to build on the foundation of an already successful, decades-old family business. And that’s what he’s done. And he’ll tell you that it’s a pretty cool way to make a living.
With an easy-going style and attention to detail, Bob works with medical professionals, executives, business owners, young families, and retirees with equal ease. His background brings a wealth of perspective to the firm and our clients. He earned his undergraduate degree in Finance and Management from the University of Kentucky and his Law Degree from Salmon P. Chase College of Law (NKU), where he focused his studies in tax and estate planning. Prior to joining The Lyon Group, Bob worked in consulting for Nielsen.
Bob is active in his church and in the community, coaching youth basketball and having served as President of the Northern Kentucky / Greater Cincinnati UK Alumni Club. He lives in Anderson Township with his wife, Stacey, and their four daughters.
Bob, his wife Stacey and their daughters are a basketball family. They love to watch, coach, play, compete and cheer each other on. And they love to do it together.
